Wide Format Print Shop Live! Seminar Schedule

In addition to the many free bonus sessions and exciting show floor features already on tap for the 37th annual show, the following sessions will be hosted at the Wide Format Print Shop Live! exhibit:

How to Evaluate Wide Format Inkjet Press

Dr. Mark Bohan – Vice President of Research, Printing Industries of America

Fri., Mar. 2, 2012 – 3:30 – 4:30 pm

Sat., Mar. 3, 2012 – 10:30 – 11:30 pm

Wide-format inkjet has many different print engines with various capabilities dependent on technology and application. Evaluating the inkjet device requires assessing both the mechanical performance as well as the RIP capabilities in combination with the printer. Evaluating the mechanical performance will include tests to evaluate the nozzle performance for blockages, the bleed created by the ink/substrate combinations, the resolution that can be achieved at particular press speeds, the text quality, and the full color gamut. To complement this, the RIP capabilities need to be assessed for several characteristics, including overprinting, font formats, transparency, RGB/CMYK conversion, spot color handling, and images containing device-independent colors. Learn how to carry out a complete evaluation of a press and the importance of the different characteristics.

Purchasing the Right Wide Format Equipment for the Right Job

Nicholas Hellmuth – Expert in Wide Format Digital Printing Technology

Thurs., Mar. 1, 2012 – 10:30 – 11:30 am

Fri., Mar. 2, 2012 – 10:30 – 11:30 am

There are many wide format digital printing options on the market. This session will explore the benefits of the different technologies and substrates and help attendees decide which technology is the best for them. Learn about the applications that are best suited for UV curable printing, eco solvent inks, latex inks, and metallic inks. Understand the productivity considerations when buying roll to roll systems, UV Flatbed, and a combination UV flatbed and roll to roll digital printing systems.

Explore the wider opportunities with FESPA

Duncan MacOwan – Head of Events and New Media, FESPA

Thurs., Mar. 1, 2012 – 2:00 – 3:00 pm

Fri., Mar. 2, 2012 – 2:00 – 3:00 pm

Each year we succeed in featuring the hottest trends and practical demonstrations so that attendees can see, first-hand, the immediate opportunities available to them to both grow and prosper in today’s marketplace.”

GOA attendees get the red carpet treatment
In its 37th year, GOA sees attendees return to take advantage of new product and technologies being showcased and often, debuting, by the large number of exhibitors. Attendees also maximize their show investment by attending the free events made available to them throughout the show.

A sampling of show floor events at GOA 2012 include, but are not limited to:

The Expo Theater

Ten powerful, future-oriented sessions are on the tap at the easily accessible Expo Theater located directly on the show floor. Sessions geared toward the latest market trends are presented by executives from exhibiting companies at the show.

Direct-to-Garment Center

In the Direct-to-Garment Center, attendees get a first-hand look at digital garment decoration technologies. Attendees can scour the area for solutions that fit their needs – and to learn techniques, tips, tricks and trends to improve production accuracy and prevent errors.

Wide Format Print Shop Live!

A show favorite, visitors engage in this innovative and live, end-to-end workflow platform. Production managers are invited to bring real job files that are test-run on an array of digital technologies, software, and consumables, to reflect a live working environment right on the show floor. Observe the “how-to” area, hosted by Dr. Mark Bohan, Vice President, Technology and Research, Printing Industries of America; to discover the best way to employ technologies and optimize production efficiency, as well as to take note of a variety of innovative applications.

Vehicle Wrap Center

The Vehicle Wrap Center features live vehicle wrap demonstrations of vinyl installations by MUTOH and Arlon. Installers get firsthand tips, tricks and techniques to improve their skills, and graphic imagers can use this area to connect with qualified installers. Graphics are printed by the 64″ ValueJet 1614 using Arlon’s DPF 6000XRP, a 2-mil gloss white cast film with bubble releasing, tinted, repositionable, permanent pressure-sensitive adhesive.

Vehicle Wrap Cup

Back by popular demand, FESPA presents the vehicle wrap competition where the “wrap stars” of the Americas region will be pitted against each other and the clock to find the FESPA Wrap Cup Champion of the Americas.

Bonus Sessions

Each year, GOA organizes free Bonus Sessions that focus on technology trends having a positive impact on attendees’ businesses. The following sessions address some of the foremost topics at the current time in the industry:

Increase Response Rates through Integrated Digital Print and Electronic Media

David Murphy, HP

Thursday, March 1 – 10:30 – 11:45 am

This presentation offers proof of how digital print – when strategically integrated with social media, email, and other electronic technologies – generates higher response rates and greater customer engagement than pure electronic channels can yield on their own.

Color Management

Heidelberg

Thursday, March 1 – 2:00 – 3:15 pm

In a fast-paced, one and a half-hour Q&A format, Heidelberg experts answer questions about how to reduce makeready times; how to save labor and material costs with existing equipment; how to determine actual production costs for specific customers; and information about G7 certification.

Maximizing Efficiencies through Automation

Steve Miller, Kodak

Friday, March 2 – 2:00 – 3:15 pm

The challenges in today’s marketplace require true automation and integration to separate best-in-class print service providers from their competition. Whether you are a package printer, or specialize in publishing or commercial print, success lies on investments being utilized to their fullest potential. By automating and integrating business production workflow systems, printers will drive costs out of their workflow systems through increased visibility, streamlined efficiencies, reduction of manual touch points and minimizing human error.

George Ryan, GOA President, says, “We are pleased to have PrintWeek come on board as the producer of the highly anticipated Show Daily publication for our 2012 show. PrintWeek is highly respected in the industry, and will undoubtedly be a great fit with the show this year.”

Orlando, Fla. – October 11, 2011 - The Printing Association of Florida (PAF) today announces that CONLATINGRAF, the Confederation of Latin American Printing Associations, will honor the winners of its XVIII Theobaldo de Nigris printing competition in Miami, Fla., during the annual Graphics of the Americas (GOA) show. GOA 2012 takes place March 1-3, 2012 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

The Theobaldo de Nigris printing competition was conceived in 1991. The competition showcases the vast abilities of the printing industries of its 15 member countries. The name Theobaldo de Nigris pays homage to one of the leaders of CONLATINGRAF, a founder of the Brazilian printing association, Abigraf, who was instrumental in the integration of the Latin American printing industries.

This is the first time that the CONLATINGRAF printing awards ceremony will be held in conjunction with the coveted Graphic Arts Leaders of the America Awards celebration, and CONLATINGRAF’s spring assembly.

“The Theobaldo de Nigris awards showcase the outstanding quality of printing in Latin America. Printers in Latin America have invested in new technology over the past two years and this is reflected in the quality of printing. We are excited to host the awards,” says George Ryan, President of Printing Association of Florida.

Judging and exhibition of the winning pieces
Judging for the CONLATINGRAF competition takes place in October 2011 in Montevideo, Uruguay. The winners will be announced on March 1, 2012 at the Graphic Arts Leaders of the Americas annual Awards reception and banquet being held at 7:00 p.m. on March 1, 2012, in the Treetop Ballroom at Jungle Island in Miami, Fla. The winning pieces will be exhibited at the CONLATINGRAF booth in the Graphics of the Americas show.

Six Florida companies went on to take home 7 Benny Awards at the national level, where a total of 36 Florida projects were recognized in Printing Industries of America’s Premier Print Awards competition. Printing Industries of America is the world’s largest graphic arts association. The six companies enjoying top honors are: Associated Printing Productions, Inc. (APPI); Lauderdale Graphics; National Communications, LLC; Progressive Communications; Rapid Press, Inc., and Southeastern Printing, which was awarded the Benny for two projects.

“The Sunshine State’s hospitality industries continue to make up a large part of the work commissioned here, but we are also seeing increasing numbers of Fortune 500 and 1000 companies turning to Florida’s high-quality, progressive, and full service communications firms for their traditional, as well as digital and multi-channel, capabilities,” said George Ryan, CEO and President of the Printing Association of Florida, an affiliate of Printing Industries of America. Examples of Florida printing firms’ clients represented in the Award-winning pool include Bacardi, Harley Davidson, and The World-Residences at Sea.

Ryan went on to thank the Florida Print Award Weekend sponsors: Fujifilm, Greenstar Recycling, Heidelberg, HP, Mac Papers, Océ, Xerox and xpedx.

Trophy winners at the Florida Awards are those who secured “Best of” category or “Best in Show” distinctions. The following table provides the details for these particular winners.

Ryan shared the stage with Jim Ronecker, Chairman of the PAF Board of Directors, and Art Abbott, Immediate Past Chairman of the PAF Board of Directors, during Award presentations. In one particularly touching moment, PAF Board Member Rich Sierra announced that the Best of Show Student Division Award has been named the Charles DePalma Award. The award was named in memory of DePalma, who was very active in the Printing Association of Florida throughout his career. Charles DePalma’s wife, Mary DePalma, presented the Award to Erin Love Taylor of Santa Fe Community College.

Another special guest at the banquet was Marilyn Monroe (i.e., an impersonator from Universal Studios Orlando), who presented the awards to the trophy-winning companies and posed for photos. Marilyn also stayed and mingled with guests at the Industry Appreciation Party, sponsored by Mac Papers, after the Awards banquet.

Glens Falls, NY – June 23, 2011 – Finch Paper and Printing Industries of America team-up to present Digital Printing Essentials: What You Need to Know to Create Top-Notch Print Projects, a comprehensive session to be held Saturday, June 25 at 3:45 pm in Room Columbus C-F, at the HOW Design Conference. Attendees will be the first to receive copies from the first run of the limited edition Digital Field Guide. The first dozen attendees to enter the session will receive autographed versions.

Leading the presentation is the Guide’s co-author, expert trainer Joe Marin. Today Senior Analyst, Digital Technologies at Printing Industries of America, Marin says that Digital Printing Essentials offers immediately useable, real-world best practices and tips to designers for digital print projects. “This is not the one you’ll walk away from, scratching your head and thinking, ‘wow, I need to go through that again; did I write down the presenter’s email?’”

“No,” Marin says, emphatically. “This is the one where you’ll be pulling your Mac out of your bag as you walk, thinking, ‘is there a place to sit down? I really want to try some of those techniques – now!’”

This special HOW Design Conference session is a crash course in how to maximize results – and the “wow” factor – when designing for digital print. During the session, Marin will demonstrate techniques for generating smart, creative, and beautiful digital print jobs. He will additionally address best practices for managing color, transparency, gradients, variable data and more.

Marin and his colleagues at Printing Industries have been learning, and subsequently teaching, digital design through output — on the job — since Apple installed its first Power Macintosh 7500 in the Printing Industries Lab in 1995, says Marin, author of dozens of graphic arts production books, guides, reports and training curricula for traditional and digital design and production. He is also the lead instructor in the best-selling Printing Industries of America workshop, Orientation to the Graphic Arts. In addition to public workshops; Marin develops, and leads, custom training programs for major industry manufacturers and suppliers.

His work as a veteran speaker on color management, PDF workflow, preparing print-ready files, web-to-print, and business-related issues has made Marin one of the Industry’s most-in-demand speakers.

Special session bonus: free, limited edition Digital Field Guide
And, for the first time ever, session attendees will see – and receive – the new, collaborative 70-page Digital Field Guide. The comprehensive guide contains design considerations for digital printing. Components include a basic breakout of current printing technology, including digital presses; and it delves specifically into designing for digital to produce optimal results.

“Our research for the Digital Field Guide allowed us to uncover and include many of the unique considerations necessary for both designers and printers to produce a job successfully on a digital press,” says Marin. “This very succinct guide serves as a roadmap and shows that Finch is committed to supporting the success of designers and printers in the digital printing market.”
